What is Gyokuro?
Gyokuro translates into English as “Jade Dew” or “Precious Dew” which is a reference to its wonderful vivid green gemstone-like color and sweet taste . It is the most highly prized green tea in Japan suitable for the most demanding connoisseurs.
It was first cultivated in the mountains of Uji in Kyoto prefecture, but the biggest producer of Gyokuro in Japan as of today is the Yame region in Fukuoka. The intense work involved in making Gyokuro shuns many green tea farmers away from making it leaving those who do make it to reap the benefits of their hard work.
Gyokuro is usually shaded from sunlight by reed screens for the last ten to twenty days before harvesting so that it retains a brilliant green color. The shading of the tea plants results in less photosynthesis which results in increased amounts of chlorophyll, caffeine, and amino acids. An amino acid called theanine, unique to tea plants, is increased which enhances the sweet taste. It has been shown that theanine reduces many harmful stress responses in humans, which allows you to relax when you drink it.
