The matcha scoop, known as chashaku in Japanese, is a spoon-like utensil used to transfer matcha from the tea caddy to the matcha bowl at a Japanese tea ceremony. Originally, matcha scoops were made of ivory, but these days the most common chashaku are made of bamboo. Each matcha scoop is carved along the vertical growth of the bamboo, the tip is gradually thinned out, and the bottom edge is cut straight. It measures from 18-22cm in length and about 1cm in width. Chashaku measures the perfect amount of matcha and is so perfectly carved and shaped that it can be seen as a miniature work of art.
