Best Green Tea - A Guide To Help You Choose
This is a useful guide to help you understand what to look out for when buying green tea. This will then in turn help you find the best green tea to drink.

Organic Japanese Green Tea:

When buying organic green tea from Japan you need to make sure that it has the JAS label. The JAS label is the certificate given and accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan. If you can't find the JAS label on the tea packet and the green tea is being sold as organic it probably ISN'T organic! Having said that, some organic green tea farmers in Japan make organic Japanese green tea labeled as "No chemical" green tea. This is because they feel it is too expensive and time consuming to file for the JAS label. There is a vast amount of paper work and visits from the ministry involved in applying for the JAS label, and it's one of the strictest accreditations of any country and often farmers have to employ someone to aid them with the forms which they simply can't afford. The JAS mark is the only way to guarantee you will be drinking organic Japanese green tea.
Here at The Japanese Green Tea Shop you can be assured that you are drinking organic green tea because all of our tea comes with either JAS certification, USDA certification or in some cases both. You can clearly see the certification logos on the product image pop-up pages, and we indicate which certification each respective product has on each product's description page.

First Pick Tea:

First pick Japanese green tea has always been prized as the best tea. It has far higher levels of nutrients, better flavor and aroma and has always been drunk by those that are seeking the greatest amount of health benefits from their tea. For these reasons first pick Japanese green tea always carries a higher price tag.
When you buy Japanese green tea it is important to check what harvest the tea has come from. Once you try first pick Japanese green tea it is difficult to switch back to drinking anything lesser. First pick is also known as first flush or first harvest, all meaning the same thing.
It's advisable to check with the retailer regarding which pick the tea is from if you are unsure.
The Japanese Green Tea Shop clearly indicates on all our product description pages which pick the tea is from.

High quality or Premium Japanese Green Tea labeling from foreign retailers and/or sellers:

WARNING! This can be very deceiving tea for the fact that any foreign retailer can purchase and label Japanese green tea as high quality or premium. Often this tea is from the lowest quality tea leaves sold in bulk and repackaged and relabeled by foreign retailers. We have seen numerous instances of this on Internet sites and auction sites.
It's advisable to check with the retailer regarding the labeling if you are unsure.

Location:

Uji, Shizuoka and Fukuoka are the places where the best Japanese green tea comes from due to each areas complex geographical features. These features make their tea far superior from other green tea producing areas in Japan. This doesn't mean that all green teas coming from these prefectures are outstanding however. Many national companies have plantations in these areas producing tea using high levels of pesticides and other non organic methods.
When considering location it is also important to consider the farmer who is making the green tea. The best green tea comes from the farmers who have a deep understanding of tea cultivation and the farms which have been farming for hundreds of years using the traditional methods of producing Japanese green tea.

Freshness:

The best green tea is always fresh from the source. Green tea which is sold outside of Japan from foreign retailers has often spent months in ocean transit before it is shelved in stores. That is why it is always advisable to purchase green tea direct from Japan.
In order for our customers to experience authentic fresh green tea The Japanese Green Tea Shop receives green tea on an on-demand basis from our farmer, and we only stock what we can sell in a short period of time.

Packaging:

The packet should be the original packet which left the factory, on or close to the farm, which processes the Japanese green tea. If the green tea packet has been opened and repackaged it often loses its quality, is handled in uncontrolled conditions and is often relabeled differently to what the content actually is.
You will need to contact the retailer regarding the origin of the packet if they don't indicate it.
All of The Japanese Green Tea Shop's packets are sealed, and labels are affixed at the farmer's factory.
