| Types of Japanese Green Tea |
|
 |
There are many different types of green tea to choose from in Japan, with a wonderful array of taste, aroma and color. Each tea offers its own unique characteristic. The following list describes the most common kinds of green tea sold in Japan:
Sencha

Sencha is the most popular type of green tea. About 85% of the green tea in Japan is Sencha. It has a wide range of quality and price. It is a daily green tea, but very high quality Sencha is only served on special occasions. It is produced by steaming young tea leaves, then rubbing and drying. It has a sweet and mild astringent taste.
Gyokuro

Gyokuro is a high quality green tea. It has a stronger flavor and aroma with less bitterness than Sencha. This is because when the buds are about to come out, the teas bushes are shaded. It is produced from young tea leaves that are covered to block sunlight for 20 days before picking. It is then rubbed and dried.
Matcha

Matcha comes in various shades of green depending on the quality, and is used in Japanese tea ceremonies and often used in Japanese cakes and sweets. It is produced from the buds under a cover to block sunlight, just like Gyokuro. The very young leaves are steamed and dried. Then all stems, twigs and leaf veins are removed by machinery and then stone ground.
Bancha

Bancha is seen as a lower grade green tea than the others, but it still has a very refreshing taste, so it's a nice drink after a meal or when you are thirsty. Bancha is produced in the same way as Sencha and using the tea leaves picked in late summer or autumn or even young leaves that are too hard for Sencha.
Houjicha

Houjicha is made by roasting Bancha. It has a brown color and has a nice toasted flavor. It is very similar to Bancha in the fact that it is very refreshing and nice to drink after a meal or when you are thirsty.
Mecha

Mecha is made from buds selected while refining Sencha and Gyokuro. It has strong flavor and taste.
Kukicha

Kukicha is also a green tea selected while refining. It has a light taste and has fresh aroma. It's an everyday green tea.
Genmaicha

It is a mixture of sencha or bancha leaves and popped genmai (brown rice). It makes a light brown tea with a mild toasted flavor. It is also an everyday green tea.
Konacha

Konacha is served in Japanese Sushi restaurants. It has both a deep taste and pleasant color. It is a powder tea collected as a by product of other green tea.
